The guy I dealt with was like a slimy used car salesman who had every excuse in the book as to why it should be okay for me to deal with that bullshit. All I ended up getting as $50 out of a $500+ rental. When I got where I was going, I complained to U-Haul about it and wanted a partial refund. I had to have all this work done along the way, which cost me time. The front-end alignment was way off, both front tires were bald on one side, it pulled to the right like crazy, and it blew several tires while en route. Years ago (1998) I moved from Omaha to the Bay Area. They expect the local shops to pay the repair bills otherwise, so the local shops don't ever fix anything they don't absolutely have to. What I learned years ago is that Corporate won't pay to repair any problems with their trucks or trailers UNLESS they're on the road, currently rented by a consumer. While I've had generally good luck with the local U-Haul locations, it's U-Haul Corporate that is the problem. Sounded as through they would rather file an insurance claim than get their merchandise returned. Seems to me that the term "good citizen" doesn't really mean muchanymore. We decided we would rather get our satisfaction from reporting via the internet exactly how customer service works with U-Haul. After being held on the line for a few minutes while he explains his blunder to his supervisor, the supervisor said she was not interested in getting our name and address and that the "reward" she was willing to offer for the return of the trailer was $10.00 off a trailer rental!!!HAHAHAHA!!! He quickly said he had made a mistake and we asked to speak to a supervisor. When he paused, we let him know who he was talking to and asked if we could be paid to return it to Auburn since we had reported it stolen. He immediately begins talking as though he's speaking to someone from U-Haul of Auburn, Alabama saying that the trailer needs to be picked up and returned to their lot. We got back on the road and a few minutes later the phone rings and its the guy from U-Haul. They were going to investigate the matter further and we asked that they call to let us know the outcome. Once giving the guy all the pertinent information regarding the trailer, he stated their records showed it had been turned into a U-Haul dealer in Foley, Alabama. Posted on the tailgate was an 800 number to report damage or if it was unattended.
Once everyone felt better, we decided to investigate the trailer. When we pulled up we commented on this REALLYnice relatively new U-Haul dual axle car hauler(probably a new value of approx $5,000) sitting unattended in the truck parking lot. Since Bella made the trip with us, we had to take turns walking Bella so we had been there for more than a few minutes.
On our return trip from the East Ride our last stop before getting home was at a State operated Rest Area.
